Gea's January 2026 came out of nowhere only if you hadn't been watching the scorelines. He opened the season at the BNC Tennis Open in Nouméa, New Caledonia, and won five matches for his first ATP Challenger title, beating Jurij Rodionov 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in the final — a result that carried him inside the world's Top 200 for the first time, at No. 197. He flew on to Melbourne, came through three rounds of Australian Open qualifying without dropping a set, and then — in the first Grand Slam main-draw match of his life — dismantled 17th seed Jiri Lehecka 7-5, 7-6(1), 7-5, a first Top 100 win, first Top 20 win and first tour-level win all at once, on a nine-match streak.

The run ended in the best way a run can end: a four-hour, 33-minute five-setter against Stan Wawrinka, the 40-year-old three-time major champion, who needed a fifth-set tiebreak to get past him 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(3). The fortnight still transformed Gea's season — his ranking climbed toward the Top 150 and kept moving, reaching No. 129 by July.
