The Breakthrough

Buse's surge began at home. In September 2025, in front of a Lima crowd, he came from a set down to beat Portugal's top-60 player Nuno Borges and clinch Peru's first Davis Cup Qualifiers berth in 18 years. Four months later — despite a two-month injury layoff at the end of 2025 — he crossed into the ATP top 100, only the sixth Peruvian man to do so. By mid-March 2026, a semifinal run at the Rio Open that included wins over João Fonseca and Matteo Berrettini had launched him 35 places up the rankings to No. 63, alongside a Masters 1000 debut in Miami.

"Things moved a little faster than expected, honestly." — To Clay (claytenis.com), May 2026

The exclamation point came in Hamburg that May. Buse qualified into the ATP 500, then beat Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik and Ugo Humbert on his way to the final against Tommy Paul — where, after treatment for dizziness early on and trailing 0-4 in the second set, he recovered to win 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3. It made him the first Peruvian to lift an ATP trophy since Luis Horna in 2007, the first to win at 500 level since Jaime Yzaga in 1993, and carried him to No. 31 — surpassing Horna's peak of No. 33 for Peru's best men's ranking since Yzaga.
