The Breakthrough

Tjen took the road almost no top-40 player takes anymore: four years of American college tennis, first at Oregon and then at Pepperdine, before turning fully professional in 2024 at age 22. The gamble paid off at startling speed. She won seven ITF titles in her first pro season — more than anyone else on the women's circuit — including a 27-match winning streak through Asia, and by one WTA accounting had won 100 of 113 matches over a 16-month stretch.

"A little emotional, but very happy." — After beating Veronika Kudermetova at the 2025 US Open, post-match interview

The wider tennis world caught up at the 2025 US Open, where she qualified and then beat No. 25 seed Veronika Kudermetova in her first tour-level main draw — Indonesia's first US Open main-draw win by a woman since 2002. Two months later in Chennai she won her maiden WTA title, the first by any Indonesian in 23 years, and by February 2026 she had carried the country's flag back inside the world's top 40.
