The Breakthrough

Born in Moscow and raised in Redmond, Washington, Liutova was handed a racket at three by her mother, a keen amateur player, and has trained at the Gorin Tennis Academy in Redmond since 2020. Watching Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal at the 2022 US Open is what turned the hobby serious. The junior résumé that followed was emphatic — Orange Bowl under-12 champion in 2022, USTA under-16 national champion in 2023, nine junior titles in all.

The professional breakthrough came in a single fortnight. Ranked No. 229 and playing her first ever WTA main draw, the 16-year-old came through qualifying at the Memphis Classic and then beat top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 7–6(2), 4–6, 5–4 ret. in the first round. Maya Joint followed 3–6, 6–3, 6–3 after Liutova trailed 0–4 in the decider, then Caty McNally 6–3, 6–4 and Elvina Kalieva 7–5, 6–1. On 2 August 2026 she beat Darja Vidmanova 1–6, 6–1, 6–3 to take the title — the youngest WTA singles champion since Coco Gauff in 2019, and only the tenth player in WTA history to win the first tour-level event she entered.

The rest of 2026 has been just as productive: ITF titles at W35 Las Vegas in February, W100 Indian Harbour Beach in May (d. Julia Riera 6–1, 6–7(4), 6–3) and W100 Sumter in June (d. Reese Brantmeier 6–4, 6–3), for a 36–5 season record. At the US Open she qualified in three rounds and then took the opening set off Zheng Qinwen before losing 6–4, 3–6, 1–6. A career-high No. 114 arrived on 14 September; she sits three places back this week, at 16 years old, with almost no points to defend.
