The Breakthrough

Alcalá Gurri, from Barcelona, took the long way up. In March 2024 he was still on the ITF circuit, fresh from a Futures title in Antalya. He told Canal Tenis that his goal was to reach Challenger level and, one day, play the Godó in his home city again. The next two years were built mostly on clay, which accounts for the bulk of his 59–18 record in 2026.

2026 is the year it turned. He won the Cervia Challenger in May, beating top seed Andrea Guerrieri in the semifinal and Gadamauri 2–6, 6–1, 6–1 in the final. Royan followed in June (7–6(4), 6–1 over Rolland de Ravel). In July he won Cordenons, beating Bondioli 6–2, 6–0, which made him the first Spanish champion there in six years and got him into US Open qualifying. At the Copa Sevilla Challenger in September, a three-hour, final-set-tiebreak win over Lagutin took him to the semifinals, where he retired against Dušan Lajović. That run earned a career high of No. 161.

He went to Plovdiv IV (21–27 September) as top seed and won it. He beat Coulibaly, Carlos Sánchez Jover and Pol Martín Tiffon (retired), then Carlos Taberner 6–4, 6–3 in the semifinal and Jonáš Forejtek 6–4, 6–2 in the final. It is his fourth Challenger title of 2026. It lifted him 25 places in the 28 September ATP release to a career-high No. 138.
