The Breakthrough

Bartunkova's 2026 announced itself in Melbourne. Playing her first Grand Slam main draw, she came through qualifying and then took out No. 10 seed Belinda Bencic 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 — recovering from a second-set bagel, snapping Bencic's 12-match winning streak, and collecting her first career win over a top-10 player on her Slam debut.

The week she was featured here, she did it again the hard way. Beaten by Anastasia Potapova in the final round of Rome qualifying, she entered the Italian Open main draw as a lucky loser after Victoria Mboko withdrew — then upset No. 17 seed Madison Keys 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to become the first lucky loser to reach the Rome last 16 since 2013. Ranked No. 94 that week, she climbed to a career-high No. 43 within two months.
