Burruchaga opened 2026 ranked outside the world's top 110 and made the hardest call of his young career in January: he declined what would have been his Davis Cup debut, a February away tie in Busan against South Korea, to protect a schedule built around South American clay. The decision drew scrutiny at home — but the results arrived almost immediately. In late March he won the inaugural Latin America Open Challenger at São Paulo's Jockey Club, then flew straight to Houston and, unseeded, cut through the draw at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship to reach his first ATP Tour final.

In the final he pushed fourth seed Tommy Paul to the brink — serving-side pressure at 5-3 in the deciding set brought up three championship points before Paul escaped 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 after two hours and 40 minutes. The runner-up finish still lifted Burruchaga to No. 77, the week this site featured him; within a month he had reached a career-high No. 56 and won his first Grand Slam match at Roland Garros.
