Gibson arrived at Indian Wells in March 2026 ranked No. 112, with only a handful of tour-level wins to her name and an 0-9 record against top-50 opposition. What followed was one of the runs of the season: she came through qualifying, beat Ann Li for her first career top-50 win, then took out top-20 players Ekaterina Alexandrova and Clara Tauson before dismantling world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 — her first top-10 win — with more than 40 winners. She became the first qualifier to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals since Lesia Tsurenko in 2015, where eventual semifinalist Linda Noskova finally stopped her 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

The groundwork had been laid over the preceding Australian summer. With coach Jarrad Bunt on board since November 2025, Gibson pushed Diana Shnaider at the Australian Open in a loss she later described as a turning point in believing her game belonged at this level. The Indian Wells fortnight lifted her 44 places to No. 68 — a top-100 debut that made her the fifth Australian woman inside the bracket — and by mid-May she had climbed on to a career-high No. 55.
